Listen to the audio version of the blog:

Music is defined in a number of ways, depending on the person performing it. Don't let others demean or change your meaning of music. You're a musician. As long as you have your instrument and musical skills, you're free to express your own music!

Alright my fellow musicians. If you are reading this right now, then that means you have finished the first two movements of my Darkside Symphony. So, to start off the final movement of my Darkside Symphony, let me ask you this question:

What is the meaning of music?

Is music some kind of sport to you? Is music something to ease your pain? Is it something to help you study better? Is it something to create that special moment with your significant other?

I know you all are probably wondering if there is even a wrong answer to this question.

The simple answer is NO. All of your answers to this question are correct.

Each person has his/her own definition of music. Music isn’t defined by a single meaning. Music is defined in an infinite number of ways, depending on the person performing it.

From the first two movements of my Darkside Symphony, I mentioned how middle and high school orchestra directors would put us down and disregard our true worth as musicians. For those of you fellow orch dorks still in those school orchestras, don’t let those jerks beat you down and demean your love for music. Music is both an art and a form of expression for each person. You have the right to freely express yourself without any judgment from them. Don’t let your love for music be stunted because of their aggressive and unproductive actions. Know why you play and never forget it!

If your school orchestra makes you hate making music, then it may be time to quit. Nick, Gen, and I quit our high school orchestra program since they were demeaning our values as musicians and our meaning of music, and we’re still able to express our music. Even if you’re not in your school’s orchestra anymore, you can share your passion through youtube like Lindsey Stirling or on the streets where everyone can see your amazing performance.

As long as you have both your instrument and musical skills, just keep playing no matter what!
