Joke of the Blog: What do you get when you cross Little Mac with a Super Mushroom?

Welcome to part 2 of my recent unpopular opinions: The ART of Gaming and How It’s Not Always a Waste of Time. If you haven’t checked out part 1 yet, well, you can check that out here or read it after this. It doesn’t matter.

Games, regardless of what your parents say, will boost your concentration. Haven’t you glued your eyes to a game, giving it 100% of your attention? Whether it’s a mobile game, online game, or video game. No matter how hard your parents call you to come down and eat dinner, you never hear them the first time… or if it was a really good game the first thousand times (prepare for a broom beating).

Your attention was focused on the game, and your concentration was focused on knocking your opponent off the stage in Smash Bros. An even more difficult task is knocking your opponent out while they’re ALREADY flying off the stage. Imagine this: your opponent is trying their hardest to either side B or up B to get back onto stage but you keep getting in the way of their landing because you’re trying to side A or down A them. There’s a slight chance you might miss and end up falling to your doom instead (especially if you’re a fighter character and have no recovery). You have to focus on landing that perfect attack. And the more you do this, the better you’ll get at it, sharpening your concentration (and coordination).

Smash isn’t the only game that’ll help with concentration though. CoD (Call of Duty) also helps boost concentration.

Imagine this: you’re stationed somewhere at higher elevation than the person you need to snipe. That said person doesn’t know where you are but you can see every little movement perfectly in your scope. So, while they’re hiding, they’re constantly looking out to see if you’ll appear. What they don’t know is that you already have a locked target on them, you just need to fire at the right time. You have this game in the bag… as long as you don’t miss.

Nerve wrecking right? But the more of these instances that you encounter, the better you’ll get at concentrating and firing without missing.

It’s not only me that thinks gaming sharpens the mind. A study was done reporting that playing action video games can increase performance on visual selective activities. And an hour of playing can increase the ability to focus.

If you remembered from part 1, I said Pokemon didn’t have much to do when it comes to the double C’s - coordination and concentration. But I did mention it helped improve strategicness. Stay tuned for the next post as I explain how that is. Answer: Mac
